Marine Drive walkway to be named after APJ Abdul Kalam
The PWD executive engineer was in charge of planting and conserving the tree
KOCHI: The Greater Cochin Development Authority will take over the conservation of trees along the Marine Drive walkway and the area will be named after A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
It was Dr. Kalam who was instrumental in protecting the green cover at Marine Drive after the trees were chopped off for security reasons during his visit in 2006.
Green activists protested against tree cutting and the matter was informed to the President. He instructed the then district collector A.P.M. Muhammad Haneesh to plant 30 trees to compensate the chopping of three trees.
The PWD executive engineer was in charge of planting and conserving the trees. During his next visit, Kalam visited Marine Drive to see the green cover.
Since the former President was keen on protecting the greenery, the GCDA has decided to take over its conservation, said its chairman N. Venugopal.
