Movie review: 'Idhu Enna Maayam' offers nothing new
Director Vijay has travelled in a tried and tested plot
CAST: Vikram Prabhu, Keerthy Suresh, Nasser
DIRECTION: Vijay
RATING: **Average
The film opens up establishing a group of jobless friends amongst which includes Arun (Vikram Prabhu). They have passion for drama, but unfortunately there are no takers for their drama troupe. To increase their fortunes, Arun comes up with an idea and forms a company UMT – Unnal Mudiyum Thambi to unite single men in love with the women they fall for. They decide to manipulate things, writes scripts and dialogues, carry it out like a how a filmmaker does a scene. All goes well until a real-estate magnate Santhosh (Navdeep) comes to UMT for assist in his love with Maya (Keerthy Suresh) who has sung for one of his ad commercials. And Santhosh is ready to spend crores of rupees to get Maya. The very mention of the name Maya takes Arun to his college days in Cochin. There Arun falls for his junior Maya and the latter also is slowly drawn towards him. But when both wanted to express their love, a turn of event separates them with Arun saying adieu to her love due to ego. Cut to present, Arun realizes it is the same Maya whom he parted ways although his friends are unaware. Does he keep up his promise to Santhosh after swindling so much money from him?
Vikram Prabhu looks good and does his part well, especially when he comes as a brooding man than as a college student. Debutant Keerthy sans makeup looks all right and has given a fine performance. The major plus is that she has dubbed her own voice, which adds to her feat. Nasser and Charlie chip in with their bits in a limited role. Director Vijay, known for his earlier clean feel-good flicks, has travelled in a tried and tested plot, which offers nothing new in this rom-com. The problem with IEM is that the story is a rather predictable affair with no great twists and turns to sustain the interest. With Nirav Shah’s cinematography, each and every frame stands out. GV Prakash’s BGM reminds you of his earlier movies and the songs are just about adequate.
