Hyderabad: Telangana State overshot its own deadline of July 31, but is all set to complete construction of toilets in all its schools in a couple of days. The state, however, has beaten neighbouring Andhra Pradesh by a huge margin as more than 10,000 toilets are yet to be completed there.
Constructing 10,000 toilets in less than 15 days is a huge task, but officials are confident that the work will be completed by August 10. Telangana State government had set itself a deadline of July 31. Officials informed that the government has completed its share of constructions. Interestingly, about 14,000 toilets of the total of 36,000 toilets were constructed in the last three months alone in Telangana State.
T Chiranjeevulu, commissioner, TS School Education said, “Credit needs to be given for that because we completed 14,256 toilets in May, June and July alone. It is a great accomplishment. We really worked hard. The 260 odd toilets remaining are to be constructed by Public Sector Undertakings (PSU). It will be done in two or three days.” Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari said the deadline would be extended, but it won’t require a long extension.
On the other side, AP could find itself in an embarrassing situation if it misses its deadline. Swachh Vidyalaya campaign was mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government in which the TD is a constituent.
Modi had said last year there should be no school without toilets. K Sandhya Rani, commissioner, AP School Education, said, “They will be completed. Majority are being constructed by PSUs. They have confirmed to complete it by August 10.”
