Actor Isvar Raghunathan is a happy man these days. His negative character in Kalyanam Mudhal Kaadhal Varai on a popular channel has brought him accolades. “Often, people channelise their hatred towards the artistes who play negative characters. But in my case, it wasn’t so. I don’t mind playing a bad guy. It interests me,” he smiles.
Isvar, who has a couple of Tamil soaps, Vamsam and Kalyana Parisu, in his kitty, gives the credit to Office, his earlier soap. “People pegged me as a good performer in that soap. Even though the serial is over, they remember me for my role,” says Isvar.
Having started his career as a child artiste, Isvar has done several commercials, but is determined to do many more serials. Ask him why, and he says it brings him satisfaction.
“I am good at balancing things. I think what I am today is because of television,” he adds. Isvar realises that television isn’t what it used to be.
“The medium has undergone a sea change. Audiences expect something different from us every time. We need to do a lot of new things to meet their expectations,” he puts in.
“If you’re going to do the same thing, then it’s not good. It all lies in how well you break the monotony,” he quickly adds.
The conviction that he could act, coupled with some experience in the media in Singapore as a marketing professional has helped groom Isvar into a better decision maker. “You have to think on your feet,” he says.
There is not one exclusive genre that Isvar associates himself with. In fact, he prides himself on having a foot in everything. He is conscious about not taking up movies at present.
“I don’t want to take that risk. A couple of my friends, who have been TV artistes have ventured into movies. But there, they are struggling for success because we are still seen with the tag ‘TV artiste’,” he explains.
