It’s been over a decade since Mumbai-based Malayalee pop star Sherrin Varghese rose to fame riding on the back of what was touted as India’s first boy band — Band Of Boys. And after having explored the pop genre for sometime with reasonable success, Sherrin once again found fame in a solo career churning out hits like Baadal. But that was more than five years ago.
After a hiatus from the mainstream, Sherrin, who recently launched his latest project #Bollytronica, is now in comeback mode, but denies that the time he spent in the gap was anything
close to a hiatus. “I have always been exploring music and experimenting with new forms,” says Sherrin, who hopes to capture a new audience with his latest musical venture.
Telling us about Bollytronica, Sherrin says, “I have always been a fan of the electronica genre and have widely explored it. I have played with some of the best electronica artists over the years as well. And Bollywood on the other hand has been one of the main cultural exports of the country and is liked the world over for its colourful nature. With Bollytronica, my aim is to bring these two genres together by taking the best out of both of them.”
But the side of Bollywood that Sherrin will be exploring can hardly be called mainstream, adds the artist. He says, “When I say Bollywood, I don’t just mean the song and dance sequences and the clutter that comes with it. What I mean when I say Bollywood music is its philosophy of being colourful. I have added this vibrancy and energy of Bollywood to the electronica genre to come up with Bollytronica.”
Ask him about his other exploits and Sherrin says, “I have been busy in the live performance circuit. But it is not like I haven’t been creating new music. Even recently I went back to my roots and explored the music of Kerala to come up with a song called Adipoli. As for next, I only want to keep exploring good music.”
