Ongole: A woman has begun protest in front of an engineering college lecturer's house, alleging that he had cheated her with false promises of marriage.

According to Chirala DSP C. Jayarama Raju, Gumma Venkata Ramana, 23, a B. Tech, third year student of St. Anns Engineering College, Chirala, fell in love with Kurapati Venkata Purna Prasad, lecturer in VRS and YRN Engineering College. He used to teach in her college when she was doing her polytechnic.

He rejected her proposal for marriage and reportedly made it clear that his parents were not agreeable to their marriage. They also decided to discuss the matter in presence of his parents on July 6.

He asked her come to his house in Mutyalapet, where they reportedly decided to commit suicide. He allegedly gave her pesticide, but did not consume it himself. She was hospitalised and recovered later.

Based on a complaint lodged by the victim, Chirala One Town police registered the case and arrested Prasad.

On Saturday, she started a silent protest before Prasad's house. Women's organisations have extended their support to Ramana. She threatened that if he did not marry her, she would commit suicide.

Alerted by the ragging suicide of Rishiteswari at the Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur, the police on Sunday posted a constable as security to her.

Mr Jayarama Raju said, "Based on a complaint lodged by Ramana, we have arrested Prasad and sent him to remand. We have posted a constable as a security to her".
