Mahe unfazed by protests in Pondy
Campaign for removal of Pondy varsity VC
KOZHIKODE: Hundreds of students, teachers and non-teaching staff of Pondicherry University are continuing their protests demanding the removal of the university's vice-chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy accused of submitting a fake CV and poor administration.
The protest already caught the attention of the nation and the social media. But in Mahe, part of Puducherry, surprisingly, there is no protest at all - by students or the public.
Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College and Mahe Co-operative College of Higher Education & Technology are two premier institutions here under the PU.
“This is a burning issue and is widely discussed in newspapers and on television channels and the social media. Even after the national attention that the protests received, the political parties or organisations in Mahe are silent,” said Jacob Sudheer, a local social activist.
“It seems we have been insulated against issues directly or indirectly affecting the society at large in Puducherry”.
Jinos Basheer, the secretary of Mayyazhikoottam, a social organization, shares the same sentiments.
“People from Puducherry never considered Mahe as their part except for the purpose of votes. Same way, the political parties in Mahe are only worried about international issues,” he quipped.
Speaking to DC, National Students Union (NSU) Puducherry state vice-president Ali Akbar Hashim said, if the authorities were not taking immediate action against the VC, the NSU–led agitation would spread to other parts.
