Human resources minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao
VisakhapatnamHuman resources minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao on Monday said that the government  would add more teeth to the AP Prohibition of Ragging Act 1977. Mr Srinivasa Rao said the  certificates of those accused of ragging would be marked in  such way that they would not be able to get admission in any  educational institution in the country.

However, a section of the legal fraternity has criticised the minister’s statement and said that it is better to organise awareness campaigns against ragging instead of giving more powers to the Act.

President of the Forum for Legal Professionals Kuppili Muralidhar said that many reports say that the death penalty does not deter murders in  India and other nations. “Similarly, being ousted from colleges for ragging may not deter ragging. Too many Acts will defeat the purpose. Steps need to be taken on university campuses to instill confidence among juniors by installing CCTV cameras at hostels, canteens  and other locations to curb ragging,” he added.

President of  the Visakhapatnam Bar Association J. Prithvi Raj said  that unless the government amends the Act, only then will those accused in ragging cases not  get admission in educational institutes the  country.

“We also want to make sure that incident like the one that recently happened at the Acharya Nagarjuna University are never repeated. The government and  the managements of various colleges have not been monitoring the situation, giving scope for ragging,” he added.
