New Delhi: A day after the joint committee on the land Bill saw BJP members backing key provisions of the law passed by the UPA, the government on Tuesday expressed its readiness to accept these recommendations.

Rural development minister Birendra Singh said the government was always open to changes on which there was a consensus. “We too must consider issues on which there is a consensus... If there are dissent notes, we will examine what are the suggestions. What is our stand will be known only after August 7,” said the minister, adding that the decision will depend on what report the panel gives and in what form.

Asked if it was not a climbdown for the Centre, Mr Singh quipped: “Even the Constitution has been amended more than 100 times.”
