Kerala gets first super specialty hospital for animals

The animals injured in accidents will be attended to by the trauma care unit of the hospital

KOLLAM: The state’s first super specialty hospital for animals was inaugurated at Thevally on Tuesday.

The hospital has advanced life saving technology for animals, including trauma care equipped with haemodialysis facility.

It  will also have the service of animal ambulance. The animals injured in accidents will be attended to by the trauma care unit of the hospital.

It  has facilities to treat renal diseases, including advanced stages of kidney failure. The  injured animals  will be given emergency medication at the hospital. A museum with exhibits related to animal protection will also function parallel to the hospital.

“Haemodialysis unit for animals is first in the state. The advanced emergency trauma care has  advanced devices, including defibrillator and patient monitoring system,” B. Bahuleyan, Chief Veterinary Officer, Kollam, said. The hospital has advanced medical procedures, including endoscopy and ultrasound scan.

Laparoscopic surgery has been employed at the district veterinary centre for sterilising stray dogs as part of controlling their increasing number. The Rs 52- lakh project has been funded by the district panchayat.
