Thiruvananthapuram: The highest demand in engineering colleges is for mechanical engineering course as the number of vacant seats in the branch is the least after admission was completed in government and government-controlled colleges.

Only 254 out of 5,107  seats (five percent)  were vacant in government colleges while government-controlled self-financing colleges had 1,586 out of 5,219  (24 percent) vacant seats.

This has forced the government to conduct a special allotment for filling up  the  vacant seats in government, aided, and government-controlled self-financing engineering colleges.

The allotment will be published on Wednesday. All students who have been admitted to the private self- financing engineering colleges will be considered for the allotment.

There are no vacant seats in mechanical production branch offered in one government college and  in mechanical (automobile) in one government-controlled self- financing college.

There are 19 vacant seats in mechanical engineering  in government colleges and 13 in  government-controlled self-financing colleges.

There is  one vacant seat each in food engineering, production engineering, agriculture engineering and industrial engineering. In the government colleges, there are seven vacant seats in applied electronics and instrumentation, five  in instrumentation and control and five  in chemical engineering.

However, the number of seats in this course is not as high as that of mechanical engineering. The vacant seats in other branches in government colleges are as follows: civil (16), computer science and technology (23), dairy science (52),  electrical and electronics (26), electronics and communication (47), food technology (25) and  information technology (25).
