TIRUNELVELI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko and CPI veteran R. Nallkannu have thanked traders for their support to the demand for total prohibition. They said the bandh on Tuesday, call for which was given by the MDMK-led two left parties, VCK and the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi along with several other social outfits, was a 'success.’
In a joint statement at Kalingapatti near Sankarankovil in Tirunelveli district, the two leaders said the bandh clearly demonstrated public support for the demand for total prohibition.
CPI leader Nallakannu in a separate statement, accused police of unleashing violence on villagers, who held a peaceful demonstration against the Tasmac retail outlet at Kalingapatti a couple of days ago. Nallakannu demanded withdrawal of the cases registered against Vaiko, his party leaders and villages.
Vaiko told presspersons that to thwart the bandh in Kanyakumari district, where more than 70 per cent of commercial establishments remained closed, police had arrested his party top leaders in the district.
65 persons in preventive custody: According to police, more than 25 public and private vehicles in Kanyakumari district were damaged since Monday night and 65 persons were taken into preventive custody.
In view of the bandh on Tuesday, security in Kanyakumari district had been beefed up by deploying an additional 1300 police personnel. The bandh call in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts however evoked a thin response from traders.
