Chennai: Two persons, a woman and a migrant labourer, were killed in separate incidents of electrocution in the city and in Mamallapuram on Wednesday.
Manju, a 23-year-old resident of Krishnadas Street at Otteri, was electrocuted. Police said she left her home around midnight to buy medicines from a nearby pharmacy and never returned. Alarmed, her family members went looking for her to find her lying unconscious in a pool of stagnated water near the intersection of Krishnadas road and Haider garden 4th road.
She was rescued and moved to a private clinic nearby and was referred to the Government Stanley hospital where she was declared brought dead. Otteri police have registered a case and are investigating. “The stagnated pool of water was in contact with an electric pole. We suspect the water to have been electrified after the overnight rains,” a police officer said.
In another incident on East coast road near Mamallapuram in Kancheepuram district, a migrant labourer died while two of his co-workers had a close shave while working on the ECR road extension project there. Police said that the trio was re-aligning the electric poles for the road extension when the incident happened. They were sitting on one of the poles and fixing wires when they suffered electric shocks. In the impact, Anandha Rao (38) from Srikakulam in AP died of electrocution while his co-workers miraculously escaped. Mamallapuram police have registered a case.
