New Delhi: The Union council of ministers on Wednesday removed anomalies in pensionary benefits of high court judges elevated from the bar, thereby implementing an order of the Supreme Court. In another decision the Cabinet also eased the stringent timeline for the settling of commercial disputes proposed in the amendments to the arbitration law. For pensionary benefits, ten years practice as advocate will be added as qualifying service for high court judges elevated from the bar, as ordered by the Supreme Court in a judgment in March last year.

“We have accepted the order of the Supreme Court in toto,” sources said after the Cabinet meeting. Sources stated that the Cabinet cleared a bill to rectify an anomaly as per which judges selected from the Bar get lesser pension than those elevated from state judicial services.
