Vijayawada police to build bonds with public
Top cop wants force to be sensitised for effectiveness
Vijayawada: In a couple of months from now, the way Vijayawada police interact with public, particularly those from weaker sections, may be a surprise to the people. Thanks to the commissioner of police who is now focusing on the untouched side of policing where hardened police personnel are sensitised in public interaction to match any global police force.
Mr D. Gautam Sawang, who assumed charge as top cop of Vijayawada a couple of days ago, has already started to nurture the police officers so that they are relieved of stress and strain taken during performing duties. Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Sawang said that soon police officers and other personnel would be given orientation programmes which help them in policing.
“Police personnel are mostly exposed to the bad elements in society and they get rusty. They need to deal with deviant behavours most of the time and interact with normal public,” he said.
“To change that in time to come we will organise more and more re-orientations programmes. We will invite people from various walks of life, including students, to interact with police personnel. This will help them slowly build up things, to start thinking and encourage them to introspect. We need to work on that and prepare them to reduce strain and burden which can bring change in their attitude and mindset,” Mr Sawang said.
“To maintain the posture of police, they should be insulated from harsh conditions and for it, constant training programmes would be orga-nised, apart from lot of courses to prepare their mindset. I have already started telling officers what are expectations people have on the police in view of capital policing”, he added.
“The weaker sections need to be served specially by police and will bring that situation and I am confident of it. At least 50 per cent of what we expect can be done through discussions and the rest is implementation”, Mr Sawang added.
About the 4th Lion mobile application, he said it is very useful to public and it would be further developed. The app was downloaded by as many as 14, 934 users so far.
