THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The long pending woes of motorists arriving in Palayam and nearby areas for shopping and other purposes would end soon with the Trivandrum development authority (Trida) constructing the first-ever multi-level parking complex behind Saphalyam Complex. Trida chairman P.K. Venugopal said that the authority would invite expressions of interest this month.

“We want the project to take off before the election code of conduct comes into effect. The parking plaza would be set up under PPP mode as part of the phase II of the capital region development programme (CRDP),” said Mr Venugopal.

He said that the project was estimated to cost around Rs 32 crores. The project is coming up on 85 cents of land owned by Trida near Palayam Connemara Market.

“We would be providing parking for 300 cars when the plaza is ready and there would be provision for constructing additional parking space for 300 more cars in the second phase. As per a study carried out at Palayam, the parking requirement is for around 250 cars. This would be a substantial facility and 30 to 35 percent of the built-up area would be used for commercial purposes to make the project financially viable,” said Mr Venugopal.

He said that Trida was also planning to provide parking at Palayam in another plot near the current land.

“We would be able to provide parking for around 200 vehicles,” said Mr Venugopal. Phase II of CRDP also moots a comprehensive parking policy for the capital city which currently lacks a parking plan.

As per the approved plan, multi-layer parking would be coming up at Vanross Jn, Thampanoor, near Saphalyam complex and Medical College.
