Hyderabad: Congress leaders were arrested after they disrupted the Ranga Reddy Zilla Parishad meeting and clashed with TRS members over the proposed change of the Pranahita-Chevella irrigation project design on Saturday.
The Congress leaders were to the Panjagutta police station. Congress leaders had alleged that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had redesigned the project to provide irrigation and drinking water to his home district Medak at the cost of Ranga Reddy district.
They said the governments had survived by selling valuable land in the district over the years but ignored it while implementing welfare and development schemes. They demanded that RR district be included in the Chevella project as per original design.
There were heated arguments between transport minister P. Mahender Reddy, MLA M. Kishan Reddy and CLP deputy secretary and Parigi MLA T. Rammohan Reddy over the issue.
Congress leaders gheroed the minister and his wife P.Sunitha, who is also the Ranga Reddy ZP chairperson. “YSR had devised the project to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and irrigation needs of RR district. Tunnel works worth Rs 600 crore have been completed at Shankarapalli. At this stage, the CM and irrigation minister T. Harish Rao have hatched a conspiracy to divert the project to their home district Medak, redesigned the project and excluded RR district, which is gross injustice,” Mr Rammohan Reddy alleged. Mr Rammohan Reddy said the Congress would intensify the agitation till the government restores the original design of project and includes RR district in it.
