THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The police department’s e-beat project controversy took a fresh turn on Saturday with Thiruvananthapuram range IG Manoj Abraham submitting a complaint to the police chief seeking inquiry into the role of a tainted police officer in ALLEGEDLY leaking confidential department files to media.

Sources said the police top brass has also been requested to inquire the circumstances under which Rahul R Nair who is currently SP Police Computer Centre, was entrusted with the probe into e-beat project irregularities.

Since Nair had himself faced serious allegations of taking bribe worth lakhs from quarry owners, questions are being raised about the decision to hand over the probe.

The state police chief has also been urged to find out as to who entrusted the probe with Nair who had earlier been suspended in corrupton case.

Moreover, he had also alleged that Manoj Abraham and R Sreelekha had pressurised him to favour some quarry owners.

The police department and Wifinity Technology Company had entered into a contract for the Rs 1.87 crore project in March 2013.

The company claimed that it had delivered all equipment including RFID tags and readers as per the contract.

Sources said the software was supplied and the whole system had been tested to the satisfaction of senior officers.

However, after installing the system the company outsourced its maintenance to a Thiruvananthapuram based firm.

So why e-beat project didn't take off ? Police sources said that project could not go forward as the police declined to migrate the system to its own server for unknown reasons.

Meanwhile there are several irregularities related to the execution and implementation of the project which requires to be probed in detail.
