THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A retired Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) committed suicide by consuming poison at his Maranalloor residence on Friday owing to alleged financial difficulties.

A suicide note  recovered a day later said that he suffered from financial issues caused by a land deal that was allegedly brokered by former Neyyatinkara DySP Vijayan.

The deceased was identified as Surendran, 60,  alias Kurian of Nirmalyam house, Moolakkonam, Alampotta, Maranallor. He consumed  acid and  was admitted to Medical College Hospital where he breathed his last.

“A suicide note recovered from his pants’ pocket   during autopsy hints at a land deal where he had to pay Rs 13.5 lakh instead of Rs 3.5 lakh,” said Maranalloor SI Surendran.

The man who recently tried to pledge the said property for his daughter’s marriage could not secure a loan as the property was apparently already hypothecated.

He has accused one Unni of Uchakkada and Ratheesh of Karinkalthotti in connection with the case and former deputy superintendent of police Vijayan is named for playing a middle man.

Surendran is survived by wife  Santha Prameela, son Kiran,25, and Kavya, 21. The Maranallor police  registered a case of unnatural death and started a probe. The suicide note will be handed over to the forensic department for detailed examination.

“The policeman named in the letter is  a retired Superintendent of Police. If injustice was done to the victim, the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” said superintendent of police  Shefeen Ahamed.
