HyderabadOfficials said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had asked them to wait till August 15 before performing pujas for rains and then go ahead with yagams if there is no improvement in rainfall situation by then.

Telangana Archaka Samakhya, the organisation of priests in Telangana, has come out with the proposal to hold yagams and special pujas and submitted it to endowments minister A. Indra Karan Reddy.

“Only one-and-a-half-months are left for the rainy season to end. If special yagams and pujas are conducted at Shiva temples and other prominent temples, the desired results can be achieved. The government has to take a decision on this at the earliest. The state is witnessing severe drought conditions like never before in recent times and if we can appease the rain god through yagams and pujas, this situation could be overcome to some extent,” said Gangu Upendra Sharma, working president of Samakhya.

The endowments minister forwarded the proposal to the government to take a call on this issue at the earliest. “Though there were good rains this season initially, there are no major rains for the past 45 days. With this, several districts are facing severe drinking and irrigation problems. Since, there are instances of endowments department conducting special yaagams and pujas to appease the rain god, there is nothing wrong in doing this now. This is the only option left for us now. We are ready to take up this process but it is up to the Chief Minister to take a call on this,” Mr Reddy said.

However, the Chief Minister is said to have asked officials to wait till August 15 with a hope that the state may witness rains in the next one week and asked them to go ahead with yagams and pujas if it is not so.
