Istanbul: Turkish police on Monday detained one of the two assailants who opened fire earlier on the US consulate in Istanbul, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.

Anatolia did not provide any details of the identity of the detained assailant but Turkish media reported that she was a woman. The motive for the attack remained unclear and a spokesman for the US embassy in Ankara told AFP: "We're still working to find out what's going on."
