Model fish ponds in all districts: Oomen Chandy
Chandy launches 2nd phase of Matsya Samrudhi project
KOCHI: As part of the ‘Matsya Samrudhi’ project, model fish ponds would be set up in all districts, said Chief Minister Oomen Chandy. He was inaugurating the second phase of the project, initiated by the Fisheries Department, here on Monday.
“Since the project is being effectively undertaken with maximum utilisation of the funds allocated, farmers are getting good benefits. The government has decided to launch Phase II of the project since Phase I was a great success. The second phase aims at increased production from the inland fisheries sector,” the Chief Minister said.
While countries like China produce 400 kg of fish from a hectare, the production here is only 40 kg. “At present, 30 reservoirs in the state have fisheries production which will be extended to 50 other reservoirs,” he said.
Fisheries minister K. Babu, MLAs Dominic Presentation, Ludy Louis, Mayor Tony Chammany, Matsyafed chairman V. Dinakaran and other officials were also present.
