Hyderabad: Describing the special category status as a right of Andhra Pradesh and not a favour, AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday demanded that the Centre should immediately grant the status to the state.
Speaking to newsmen at Parliament House on Monday morning, the AICC leader said the UPA government led by the Congress had given an assurance in the Rajya Sabha over extending special category status to AP as the residuary state would suffer on account of deficit revenues.
“BJP leaders had demanded special status for AP. Now they are ruling the government and they should not think that they are doing as if doing some help to AP,” Mr Gandhi said. “In fact it is the right of AP to get special status. If they (the Centre) are not going to grant it we will not keep quiet,” he said.
Referring to the self immolation by Congress worker B. Muni Koti in Tirupati, Mr Gandhi said it is high time for the BJP to immediately announce the special status for the state failing which Congress will launch mass agitations.
