Hyderabad: A sex worker working for the NGO Chaitanya Mahila Mandal has swindled Rs 5 lakh from the Telangana State Aids Control Society in the name of educating her peers about safe sex and HIV and AIDS.

The worker, who was a part of CMM, has been suspended and action will be taken against her, stated senior officers.

The sex worker, Jaya Amma D., worked at the NGO and was entrusted the job of conducting regular meetings with sex workers in the Twin Cities and impart knowledge about safe sex, HIV and AIDS.

While she was supposed to reach out to 1500 sex workers, it has come to light that absolutely no work was done at the ground level.

A senior officer said, “These meetings are part of a program to spread awareness among the sex workers. There are supposed to be six meetings conducted every month. But while on paper she showed that the meetings were conducted, there was no work done on the field. No pictures, no meeting details and also no feedback were collected by her.”

From June to Dec. 2014, Jaya Amma withdrew Rs 10,000 for every meeting in the form of vouchers.  On being confronted, Jaya Amma threatened the field officers and evaded questions regarding why the money was not withdrawn via cheques but taken via vouchers.
