Chennai: The state secretariat has jumped into festival mood gearing up for Independence Day celebrations. White washing and decorative bulbs have started adorning the power corridors of secretariat and the park located opposite the St George Fort is now being spruced up by the Chennai corporation.
With Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa scheduled to hoist the tricolour and announce new schemes, the police and government staff are working overtime. Areas, where VVIPS and top brass of the central forces are to be seated are now under security cover and a sprawling pandhal running to more than 300 metres is coming up along the Kamaraj road.
Except new announcements and public friendly initiatives on the D-Day and there will also awards for bravery and rewards for the uniformed staff, a senior official said. Meanwhile the AIADMK functionaries have also started ordering festoons and banners and are erected along the arterial Kamaraj Salai from Poes garden to the secretariat. On Tuesday, the city police also conducted a rehearsal in front of the secretariat. The traffic police are also working on traffic arrangements to be made on August 15.
