Hyderabad: Parents of schoolgoing children have demanded that the government set up a committee to examine the financial statements of private schools on the lines of the Justice Anil Dev Singh committee constituted by the Delhi High Court.

The Justice Anil Dev Singh committee had ordered private schools to refund nearly Rs 250 crore to parents.

The Hyderabad School Parents Association said it was organising programmes like “Fees pe Charcha” in gated communities and residential complexes.

Demanding government intervention to regulate the exorbitant hikes in school fees, the HSPA said, “Urgently an investigation committee like the Justice Anil Dev Singh committee should be set up to check the conformity with existing provisions.”

According to GO 1, 1994, private schools can earn a maximum profit of 5 per cent and half the fees should be paid as salaries to teachers. The rules also mandate that schools submit their annual returns to the government.

Noticing a similar violation of rules, the Delhi HC-appointed committee had investigated nearly 990 private schools out of which 508 were asked to refund fees.

The HSPA has asked for a law on the lines of the TN Schools (Regulation of Collection of Fee) Act 2009.
