Tamil film producer arrested for links with idol smuggling group

Sleuths had seized the idols worth over Rs 77 crore in May in Chennai from a cinema production executive

ChennaiTamil cinema producer cum director V. Sekar, who runs Thiruvalluvar Kalaikoodam was arrested by sleuths from the idol wing of economic offence wing on Wednesday for his alleged links with a smuggling racket that was behind the stealing of eight idols from three temples in Vandavasi in Tiruvannamalai district. Sleuths had seized the idols worth over Rs 77 crore in May in Chennai from a cinema production executive.
 
A team under the supervision of ADGP Prateep V Philip and IG Ashok Das of EOW zeroed in on the suspect on Wednesday. V. Sekar had produced and directed more than a dozen family movies in the past and was in touch with idol thieves directly, the police said.  “We are on the lookout for three more suspects, including a college student in the case,” said Ponn Manickavel, DIG, idol wing.
