Chennai: Good news for corporates. Tamil Nadu with 48.5 per cent population living in urban areas will continue to be the most urbanised state for the next 15 years and by 2030 about 70 per cent of population in TN will live in cities.
With literacy rate and eight growth parameters like infrastructure, education, health, transport and power pushing the state index the city limits will grow eating into the suburban areas with new industries, said industries department sources, who are now ascertaining TN’s brownie points ahead of Global Investors Meet scheduled next month.
The latest presentations by the industries department officials’ banks on rapid urbanisation with surplus power by 2016 having 50 per cent of work force under less than 35 years of age mostly residing in urban areas. The department had also released the schedule of events and seminars to be conducted by the state and foreign partnering countries. For the purpose the Nandambakkam trade centre will have six sprawling exhibition halls.
With less than a month left, the process of printing invitations have commenced and about 4,000 delegates are to attend the event. Besides, a delegation of Tamil Nadu officials will leave for China next week seeking investments, said a senior official. “We have started collecting the details of foreign business captains and diplomatic people from Delhi and other embassies. There are positive responses from the local and foreign firms and the registration has crossed the 1000 mark and is growing steadily”, the official said.
The state government is upbeat about the upcoming GIM and all the departments concerned are working towards making it a grand success. “Rapid urbanisation and power surplus state by 2016 are the two major areas that we will bank on,” said energy secretary Rajesh Lakhoni.
