Bengaluru: Couple doesn’t want to pursue police case
The police have left it to the family to resolve the issue amicably before the court
Bengaluru: To keep the family of an MNC employee that includes an eight-year-old child intact, the Jeevan Bimanagar police played a sensitive and vital role in handling the case of Arbindo Chakravarthy (45), who stabbed his wife Smitha Das (37), before stabbing himself at their Kodihalli apartment in East Bengaluru on Thursday. The police have formally booked Arbindo for causing grievous hurt, but has left it to the family to resolve the issue amicably before the court, an investigating officer.
“The parents of both Arbindo and Smitha arrived in the city on Friday and met the couple at the hospital. Both the families, including the couple, are unwilling to proceed with a complaint,” said a senior police officer. “The couple had differences between them and admitted that their fight went out of control on Thursday afternoon. Smitha told us that she does not want to pursue with the complaint against her husband,” he said.

“Based on the reports from the hospital, Smitha’s stab injuries were not life threatening and there is no need for a case of attempt to murder against Arbindo as there was no intention of murdering the victim. Further, the husband, after stabbing himself, drove the wife along with him to the hospital in their car,” said an investigating officer.
The altercation that triggered it all
The altercation between the couple, on Thursday, was over a trivial issue. Arbindo was reportedly depressed and was being treated at Manipal Hospital. Initially, Arbindo had plans of settling down in Australia along with his wife and child, but his wife was against the idea and they quarreled over it.
In April, Arbindo went to Australia for a three-week stay, but returned to tell his wife that he was no more interested in going to Australia. But by then, Smitha had changed her mind and wanted the family to go Down Under. The issue sparked fresh quarrels between the couple. On Thursday, in the heat of argument, Arbindo stabbed Smitha with a knife. When he realised what he had done, Arbindo stabbed himself. Later, he took his injured wife along with him in their car to Manipal Hospital, the police said.
“It’s an issue between the husband and wife. We have given them all help, support and counseling, keeping in mind the future of their 8-year-old daughter,” said Mr N. Satheesh Kumar, DCP, East Division.
