Chennai: A 32-year-old person was arrested on Friday in connection with the torching of Tasmac outlet on South Boag road in T. Nagar on Wednesday taking the toll to four. The accused, Karukka alias Vinodh of SM Nagar in Teynampet went absconding after the incident, police said.
Earlier on Wednesday, police had arrested his accomplice, Kannan of the same area a few hours after the outlet was torched. Kannan led the cops to two others, Ramachandran and Guna who were arrested on Thursday morning.
Investigators, who were initially suspecting a civic dispute between the owner of the land where the outlet is located and the bar owner to be the reason behind the incident, found out that one of the accused, Ramachandran had plotted the attack as a mark of protest.
“He wanted to earn a name for himself through the anti-liquor agitations and took the help of the other three who are Tasmac regulars to set fire there,” an investigating officer said. An employee at the shop, Palani suffered burn injuries after the fire accident on Wednesday where three men threw a can of petrol and set fire inside the shop around 4.30 pm.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Tasmac employee’s association has asked for better security measures in the wake of the recent attacks on Tasmac outlets across the state.
