Kanakakunnu palace set to open before Onam
Tourism director Sheik Pareeth said the work would be completed by August 20
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The renovated Kanakakunnu palace premises and Nishagandhi auditorium will be thrown open to the public before Onam.
The beautification of the premises comprising lawns and benches, pavements and children’s park had begun in May.
The steps leading to the palace highlight its glory. No work was carried out in the palace building.
Tourism director Sheik Pareeth said the work would be completed by August 20.
“We hope to throw open the palace premises to the public during the Onam week celebrations,” he said.
“About 80 percent of the renovation being carried out by the Kerala Land Development Corporation (KLDC) at a cost of Rs 3.05 crore is over and only the finishing work and electrification remain to be completed,” said KLDC managing director P.G. Raveendranath.
The walkways have been improved and widened to enable more people to move around on the premises, which is one of the favourite hangouts of city residents.
Lawns have been also replanted with better quality grass. Hundreds of morning walkers and joggers will also be able to use the area.
