ChennaiG. Kothanda Raman, deputy superintendent of police from Tamil Nadu  with National Investigation Agency (NIA), who assisted in various probes linked to terror including catching a Pakistan spy who was operating from Chennai, has been selected for President’s police medal for meritorious service this year. 
 
He is the only non-IPS officer from NIA to receive prestigious award. All other four NIA officers selected for President’s medal this year are IPS officers.
 
Apart from being a part of NIA team that nabbed Arun Selvarajan, a Sri Lankan  who was running an event management company while parallelly working for Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence, Kothanda Raman was part of probe teams that investigated Malgaon blast besides massacre by NDFB in Assam. The government of India has also announced award of medals for 24 officers of Tamil Nadu police. 
 
24 officers awarded for meritorious service
Two officers – Amaresh Poojari, inspector general of police, Tamil Nadu Police Academy, C. Sudarashan, DSP, DVAC, Chennai, have been selected for President’s police medal for distinguished service. Twentytwo other officers have been awarded the police medal for meritorious service. As many as 13 other police officers who had done excellent work in criminal investigation and also those who showed keenness for selfless public service were awarded with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s police medal for excellence in investigation.
 
The President had also approved the award of fire service medal for meritorious service for four from Tamil Nadu fire and rescue services including S. Vijaya Sekar, joint director.
