Hyderabad: Teachers in Telangana state will now have to learn spoken English online to fulfill the government’s plan to convert all government schools into English medium schools. The government is planning a massive online training course on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) pioneered Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). Teachers will also be required to take an online test on the lines of TOEFL to obtain certification for the course.
CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao had earlier announced that all government schools in TS, which predominantly teach in Telugu, should be converted to English medium. Consequently, officials have drawn up an ambitious plan to train a whopping 20,000 government teachers in spoken Eng-lish. Proficiency in English of government teachers is believed to be quite low and therefore unfit to teach in English medium.
“We are working out a programme with online classes in spoken English for teachers over the next six months. We will give them disks or transmit courses through the internet. They will have to appear for an online test at the end of the course,” said the TS School education commissioner T. Chiranjeevulu.
