Chennai: An 18-month-old girl child died after she drowned in a bucket of water in the bathroom of her residence at Ammaniamman Koil street in new Washermenpet on Friday evening.
The child, A. Jayashree was playing in the hall when the mother, A. Kamatchi, was in the kitchen on Friday evening. Kamatchi’s husband, Anuraj, employed with a private company was out at work, police said.
Around 3 pm, the occupants of the house started searching for the child after she was to be found nowhere. “The child was found head down inside a bucket of water in the bathroom a few minutes later. The child managed to crawl into the bathroom and might have peeped into the bucket which led to the accident,” said an investigating officer.
Parents and neighbours rushed the child to a nearby clinic where the doctors declared the child brought dead. The body was later moved to the Government Stanley hospital for post-mortem. New Washermenpet police registered a case and handed over the child’s body to the family members after autopsy.
