Chennai senior citizens are ‘Pride of Madras’
On August 21, they will be honoured with the ‘Pride of Madras’

Chennai: They are ordinary citizens who lead ordinary lives. But what they did had an extraordinary impact on the people around them and they became the “Pride of Madras”. This Madras Week, several senior citizens from the city who have contributed to society in various ways -from helping the police to actually building a locality - will be recognised for their work by the Senior Citizen’s Group of Besant Nagar (SCGOBN).
On August 21, they will be honoured with the ‘Pride of Madras’. The idea to award them popped up in V. Chandrasekhar’s mind, founder of SCGOBN, and himself have been contributing for development of Besant Nagar by taking up several civic and social issues for the past five years. Among the nominated ones most of them have retired and are passionately working for the development of society.
P.A. Seshan, 85, a retired IAAS (Indian Audit and Accounts Service) officer and one of the awardees, is said to have helped in the development of Besant Nagar. He distributed his property among the poor and gradually helped in developing Besant Nagar.
Another awardee, C. Vijayalakshmi, 57, a school teacher, had helped in curbing chain snatchings in Besant Nagar. She took the initiative to involve police and educated the women to be aware of chain snatchers. Sixty-three year-old N. Santhanam, a retired bank manager, went out of his way to help customers in resolving their bank-related problems.
The other awardees include Gunaseelan Rajan, managing director, Rajan Dental Institute, B.A Kodandaraman, MD, Vivek ltd and Latchumanadhas, chief cardiologist, Madras Medical Mission.
