Rains bring relief, but expose GHMC flaws
Sunday’s rains came as a relief from the prolonged dry spell but the flooded roads and drains irked residents. In the last 24 hours, Hyderabad recorded 23.4 mm rainfall according to the Indian Meterorolog-ical Department data. Though the maximum temperature forecast for the city was around 33ºC, the rains brought it down to 28.5ºC.
The day started with rains. While there was a moderate downpour for a couple of hours, there was a continuous drizzle till the evening. Water stagnation was reported at Tolichowki, Bible House, AS Rao Nagar, Safilguda, Jubilee Checkpost, LB Nagar, Peddammagudi, Madhapur, LIC Colony in West Maredpally, Trimulgherry and several low lying areas.
Traffic took a beating due to waterlogging and overflowing drains at Uppal, Alwal, LB Nagar, Tolichowki, Mehdipatnam, Filmnagar, Ameerpet, Dilsukhnagar and several areas in the old city as also some places in Madhapur and Gachibowli in the city.
The GHMC had earlier boasted that it had 81 emergency teams to handle monsoon-related emergencies, but the flooded roads showed that action was lacking. “The central emergency team received several calls about water stagnation, overflowing stormwater drains, flooded roads and also complaints about trees that had fallen on roads,” said an official from the GHMC’s emergency team.
