New Delhi: As the BJP swept civic body elections in Madhya Pradesh against the backdrop of the Opposition’s onslaught against Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and the BJP leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the “efforts of karyakartas and party leaders” of the BJP.

Mr Modi’s tweet, however, did not refer to Mr Chouhan at all, in what was seen by many as a clear indication that the BJP central leadership had not given a “clean chit” to the Chief Minister, who is under Opposition pressure to resign.

The BJP has won eight out of 10 civic bodies in the state, whose results were declared on Sunday. “MP civic poll results are gladdening. I thank people of MP for reposing their trust in BJP. I salute efforts of karyakartas and party leaders,” Mr Modi tweeted.

Mr Chouhan claimed that the results were a “fitting reply to negative forces” who were “bent upon tarnishing” the state’s image. Mr Chouhan also warned his opponents that Madhya Pradesh was “moving rapidly” on the development path and had no place for “negative politics”, so the “sooner the Opposition realises it, the better”.
