Manchester (England): Sergio Aguero’s exquisite solo strike and late goals by Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho earned Manchester City a 3-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday in the first heavyweight showdown in the English Premier League, compounding the champions’ early-season problems.

Aguero made amends for a slew of early misses by exchanging passes with Yaya Toure, twisting inside his marker and placing a pinpoint shot inside the far post in the 32nd minute.

A hungry-looking City kept the initiative. Kompany headed in David Silva’s corner in the 79th minute and Fernandinho drove in a third six minutes later for the victory.

Arsene Wenger breathed a sigh of relief as Arsenal got their title challenge up and running with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

After slumping to a dismal 2-0 defeat against West Ham United in their Premier League opener, Wenger’s side had no margin for error at Selhurst Park if they wanted to avoid being cast adrift in the title race.

They rose to the challenge, securing a first league win of the season thanks to Olivier Giroud’s superb 16th-minute volley and a Damien Delaney own goal in the 55th after Joel Ward had pulled Palace level in the 28th minute.
