Adani can’t operate another port nearby

It will be increased to 10 lakh containers in the 10th year

Thiruvananthapuram: The concession agreement reached between the State Government and Adani Ports has specified that the Adani port or through its associate would not operate any other port situated within a distance of 250  kilometres from Vizhinjam Port.

The agreement also spells out the annual capacity of the port  to be six lakh containers in the first year of operation. It will be increased to 10 lakh containers in the 10th year.

According to the agreement,  defence forces can at all times use  the port and all facilities thereof without any restriction or  constraint on payment of compensation in accordance with applicable laws.

The state government has set apart Rs 220 crore, or 8.2 per cent of the total cost of state share for the construction of the Port, for the rehabilitation of the displaced and also for restoration of environment.

While Rs 140 crore has been earmarked for the protection of environment and for the state’s social responsibility programmes, an additional Rs 80 crore has been earmarked for social welfare programmes in the region.

The social responsibility works planned are: a drinking water  project, construction of a fishing harbour, a fish processing park, a logistics training centre, a solid waste management plant, the upgradation of Mulloor School and health-related activities.
