Hyderabad: A division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justi-ce S.V. Bhatt of the Hyderabad High Court on Monday issued notices to the AP government and the GMR Group and other respondents on a PIL seeking to declare the government’s inaction in overseeing the development of the SEZ at Kakinada as illegal.
The Bench was dealing with a PIL by Ms V.L. Jayaprada Devi, a resident of Kakinada, who stated that as per the agreement, if the developer of the SEZ failed to undertake the activity within three years, the state could cancel the development agreement.
She said that in this case, however, the government had granted an extension of permissions for the Special Economic Zone at Kakinada (KSEZ), without assigning any reason to the GMR SEZ and Port Holdings Pvt. Ltd.
Counsel appearing for the developer submitted that certain units in the SEZ were already functioning and several industrial houses were coming forward to establish units.
The Bench granted four weeks to file their counter affidavits.
