‘Sup’ with the soul!
This city girl is the voice behind many hit Kannada songs. The winner of the Voice of Bangalore gets candid about her life...

What is common to Belli, Savaari 2, Jailalitha, Namasthe Madam, Rose, Jayammana Maga, Topiwala, Rang, Doodh Sagar, Karodpathi, Bangaari and Gaganachukki? They are all films for which Bengaluru girl Supriya Lohith has sung playback, of course. Ever since she sung the melodious Hoovantha Preethi in the film Taj Mahal, her’s has been a voice that has rung across over 100 Kannada films. The winner of the Zee Kannada Saregamapa and the Voice of Bangalore reality shows is now a professional singer with little time to spare as she shuttles from recordings to live shows.
Music runs in Supriya’s blood, in her daily activities and is the binding thread that unites all her interactions. She says, “My mother has a beautiful voice and I was blessed to be trained by my grandfather, the Vidwan Munivenkatappa. Although my foundation was Carnatic classical, I was very keen to learn the technique of singing in cinema. So I went ahead and took part in these reality shows. When I won them, I was naturally overjoyed. I recorded my first song in 2007 and it’s been eight fruitful years since then – each of which have gotten better and better.”
In addition to performing in locations across the world, Supriya has often teamed up with singers like Ankit Tiwari, Hariharan, Tippu, Karthik, Kunal Ganjawala, Vijay Prakash, Rajesh Krishnan and Hemanth for recordings and concerts. A jovial spirit and shrewd reader of the audience, Supriya prefers live shows with lots of excitement to concerts with select gatherings.
“I was singing at Phoenix recently and the show was open to all. I love this kind of a setting where it is up to me to draw the audience in. I began with some slow melodies and moved on to the peppy numbers and by the end of it, the audience were dancing!” says the lady with the golden voice.
As she travels to Mysore to rehearse for this weekend’s live show, Supriya recounts the contributions of the people who matter the most to her. “I wish to show my family – especially my father and my husband Lohith – that their sacrifices for me have been justified. While I move about all day, I am usually a very homely soul and love nothing more than to cook and tidy up my home,” says the woman who is ever ready to break into a laugh over a comedy soap or a joke someone has uttered.
