Special drive to crack down on illegal liquor

KOZHIKODE: The excise department has launched a massive drive in the district in a bid to check the inflow of spirit and spurious liquor to the state in the wake of Onam festivities.
“We have intensified search operations and joint raids along with police, forest and revenue departments across the district,” said excise deputy commissioner P.K. Suresh.
“So far we have conducted 140 raids apart from six joint raids,” he added. The department also registered 30 cases under Abkari Act, two cases of drug abuse and twelve cases under Cigarettes and other Tobacco products Act, arresting a total of 19 individuals.
During the drive as much as 92 liters of Indian made foreign liquor, 79 litres of Mahe made foreign liquor, 110 grams of ganja and a vehicle were seized. In total 1,061 litres of spurious liquor was destroyed.
The team also raided 178 licensed institutions and also seized 10 kilograms of silver during the raids.
A special district-level control room has also been set up during the season to check the flow of liquor.
