VijayawadaThe RTC is set to hike fares in the state by 10 to 15 per cent. Disclosing this, APSRTC MD N. Sambasiva Rao said on Wednesday that the corporation had sent proposals to the state government and a decision on the quantum of hike was awaited. The new fares are expected to be implemented from the end of September or the first week of October.

He said the RTC would utilise its vacant land to increase the revenue by putting it to non-traffic commercial use. He said there was a proposal to charge Rs 1 from passengers as amenities fee in all services, excluding Telugu Velugu. During a review meet with officials here on Wednesday, Mr Sambasiva Rao said the salaries of staff was increased significantly by effecting the 44 per cent fitment, which was costing the corporation Rs 55 crore a month. “There has been no  fare hike after 2013. We have sent proposals to the CM for examining all possibilities. Without a fare hike of at least 10 to 15 per cent, the APSRTC will suffer a huge cash loss and will be in a serious debt trap,” he said.
