Tamil Nadu Assembly to sit till September 29

The assembly is to convene against the backdrop of statewide demonstrations by opposition parties seeking total prohibition on liquor

ChennaiThe Tamil Nadu legislative assembly session, which is set to commence on August 24, will last upto September 29. The business advisory committee (BAC),led by speaker D Dhanapal, which was convened on Friday, has penciled in 19 working days in the session, which may open on Monday with an obituary reference to former president Dr. Abdul Kalam as well as condolence resolutions in remembrance of Sethur Pandian, who served as a minister in this regime and legendary music composer M S. Viswanathan.
 
The assembly is to convene against the backdrop of statewide demonstrations by opposition parties seeking total prohibition on liquor and agitations against controversial statements made by E.V.K.S. Elangovan. 
 
Also, Ms Jayalalithaa, representing the labour dominated R.K. Nagar as its MLA, will be coming to the Assembly for the first time in her fifth stint as CM. The session is likely to be stormy given the hot political scenario. 
 
On its second working day, the house will debate issues and bills related to housing department and agriculture while the opposition DMK MLAs are likely to rake up the Moulivakkam building collapse deaths. It is on September 22 that discussions on home and prohibition portfolios held by CM Jayalalithaa are scheduled to take place.
