CM Oommen Chandy to open orchidarium at Vagamon

Over 3,000 varieties of orchids and 200 varieties of roses will be available at the orchidarium

Kottayam: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the Vagamon orchidarium and floriculture project on  the 15.2- hectare land opposite  the Elappara-Pullikkanam road on Monday.  
 
Over 3,000 varieties of orchids and 200  varieties of roses will be available at the orchidarium.  The sale of  forest produce such as sandal powder, lemon grass oil, sandal wood oil, eucalyptus oil and red sandal oil will also be conducted.  
 
The preliminary plan  was prepared by chief forest conservator, social forestry, Ernakulam,  and the horticulture department of the Kerala Agriculture University.
 
Twenty-two people of Vagamon were given employment as part of the project, Mr Peter Donatus Fernandez,  divisional manager,  Kerala forest development corporation, told DC.
 
Its  work  began in 2013 and a fund of Rs 1.55 crore was  allotted by the state forest department.
