Vijayawada: Another incident of a brain dead patient’s organs being donated by the family members has restored one’s faith in humanity.

The act of donating the organs of a brain dead patient D. Sudheer by his parents Siva Ram Prasad and Vijayalakshmi establishes the fact that awareness about organ donation had a far-reaching effect on the people in the city.

Parents of Devabhakt-huni Sudheer, 22, a B.tech Student, who went into coma after an accident at Telaprolu on Friday, donated his organs.

Sudheer’s father Siva Ram Prasad said that his son was on his way to college on Friday to collect his certificates when a  vehicle rammed into him.

“Soon after the crash, he was rushed to Andhra Hospital in Vijayawada.  Though the doctors tried to save his life, he was declared brain dead after few hours,” said Mr Siva ram Prasad.

When the hospital staff suggested the family members that his vital organs could save several other lives, his mother, Vijayalakshmi, a senior nurse at the same hospital, accepted the suggestion and asked the hospital management to make arrangements for transplantation.

Therefater, the hospital staff, along with the help of police, created a green channel on the National Highway leading to Gannavaram airport to send Sudheer’s heart and lungs to Chennai on a special flight, said hospital management.

While one kidney was donated to Arun Kidney Centre in the city, the second one was given to Ayush Hospital.  Sudheer’s liver was transferred to Care Hospital, Vizag and eyes were donated to Vasan Eye Care in the city, said Andhra Hospital’s chief pediatrician P.V. Rama Rao.

It must be remembered that earlier this year Thota Manikanta gave a new lease of life to patients in Chennai, Hyderabad and Guntur.
