Mangaluru: Just when you thought the BJP and its Senes had backed down, now that they no longer rule the state, comes the brutal thrashing of a young man from a minority community because he was speaking to a Hindu girl!

On Monday evening, right wing activists allegedly tied a young man to an electric pole, stripped him down to his underwear and assaulted him in full public view at the busy Attavar area of Mangaluru city around 7 pm.

Sources said the young man named Shakir was speaking to a young woman who worked in the same commercial complex where he was employed when a gang of saffronists thrashed him for talking to the woman.

Passersby failed to intervene but police who received an alert came to the young man's rescue, and rushed him to hospital. Unconfirmed reports indicate police may have taken some of the attackers into custody.

DCP (Law and Order) Shanthraj told Deccan Chronicle that the police were investigating the case. Saffron outfits and vigilante groups were active in the coastal region during BJP rule. Incidents like Church attack, pub attack and home stay attack had grabbed the attention of the society.

Though Congress had declared it would put an end to vigilante activities in the region if voted to power, several such incidents have continued. Monday's incident is the most brutal so far.
