A city should have a minimum of 20 lakh population to get metro rail project

Vijayawada city does not qualify the criteria for being sanctioned with a metro rail project

Hyderabad: The Centre has informed the Andhra Pradesh government that Vijayawada city does not qualify the criteria for being sanctioned with a metro rail project. A city should have a minimum of 20 lakh population to get metro rail project and Vijayawada has less than 15 lakh even if one were to go by as on date population.

Sources said even more shocking is the fact that the Union urban development ministry has found fault with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Vijayawada Metro Rail prepared by none other the ‘Metroman’ E. Sreedharan. The ministry informed that the Vijayawada metro rail project is not eligible for even “Central funding” going by the DPR.
