Chennai: All classes in the political science department in Madras university have been suspended as student protests continue to reinstate Professor R. Manivannan as Head of Department. According to a circular issued by the University, students are not allowed to enter the college campus and those staying in hostels have been asked to vacate their rooms till further orders. The decision comes a day after 10 students were suspended for not attending classes as they continued protesting for the reinstatement of the Professor.
The circular stated that all classes in the department of Politics and Administration would be temporarily suspended from August 26. The reopening date will be intimated later.
The students of PG and M.Phil are informed not to enter any of the campuses of Madras University. It also read, “The students of the politics and administration department are requested to vacate their hostel rooms immediately. Students found inside the premises of the university, violating the conduct rules are liable for punishment.’
“The Vice Chancellor is threatening the students. The students are also protesting for basic amenities which Manivannan sir used to support. But the administration is doing unnecessary things,” said student C. Karmugil. She further said that despite the suspensions, the protest would go on outside the campus.
Some students also wanted to negotiate with the administration. They said they wanted to seek an apology for whatever happened and collectively write a letter to the registrar and ask him for withdrawal of suspension. To this the Registrar said that he needs a letter from individual students and not a collective letter only after which would he reconsider.
“We are protesting for the last 13 days for one cause. Instead of listening to us the administration is creating more problems. Tomorrow we will get the stay order,” said Priya (name changed) a hostel student.
Vice-Chancellor R. Thandavan was unreachable all day and could not be contacted. It may be recalled that Dr R. Manivannan was removed earlier this month as the head of the political science department without an explanation. The students have been protesting ever since and on Wednesday their agitation entered its 13th day.
