Bengaluru: A 21-year-old school teacher died on the spot after she came under the wheels of a speeding truck on the busy Cottonpet main road in Chickpet traffic police station limits on Wednesday morning.
Police said the victim, identified as Ashwini Rajesh, was riding pillion of a two-wheeler being driven by her sister Priyanka Srinivas. They were on their way to St Catherine Convent High School in Cottonpet, where Ashwini worked as an English teacher.
When they reached the Binny Mills junction on Cottonpet main road around 7:30 am, a speeding truck, laden with gas cylinders, hit the scooter from the rear. While Priyanka fell on to the left side of the road and sustained injuries, Ashwini fell on to the right and came under the left front wheel of the truck, killing her on the spot.
The Chickpet traffic police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem and Priyanka was rushed to nearby hospital. A large crowd had gathered at the spot even as the police tried to clear the truck from the road to decongest the traffic flow. The body was later handed over to the family members.
The truck was seized by the police and it was learnt that immediately after the accident the driver fled and later surrendered to the police. A case of accidental death due to negligence and rash driving has been registered and the police are investigating further.
Ashwini got married six months ago to Rajesh, who works with a private travel agency. They were residents of Binny New Layout, the police said.
